Recently we discovered a fun and free activity at Lowe's on Saturday mornings (I think Home Depot also does something like this too). Lowe's version is called "Build and Grow." You just sign up for it online and then show up the day of the activity. They provide the apron, kid-friendly project (easy to follow instructions and all the pre-cut wooden pieces), and hammers and nails.

After they finish the project they give each child a patch to put on their apron and a certificate. We have gone a few times now and every time the kids are so excited to go. They love making a wooden project on their own and pounding their own nails in. They are already talking about going back to hammer more nails. We just went this Saturday and made Christmas ornaments (no pictures of those). These pictures were taken a few months ago during a couple of different sessions.
