I had sinus surgery on September 3rd. This was surgery #4 (over the past almost 20 years). For the last 20+ years, my sense of smell and taste has been pretty much non-existent unless I'm on high doses of prednisone (which I try not to do very often-not very good for your body). While I was on my high dose of prednisone while preparing to have this surgery, I started to feel like I was "coming alive". Two of my five senses (taste and smell) were coming back and I think the steroid was also giving me an energy boost. Those three things seemed to make a huge difference in my sense of well-being. I was beginning to feel alive again and had been praying that after I taper off the prednisone that it won't just gradually fade away like it usually does. I was also hoping that the sinus surgery would also have a more-permanent effect on me this time. Hopefully this one will be my last and I will not have to have another sinus surgery ever again!
The surgery went well and the recovery seemed pretty quick. The sense of smell did gradually fade away though within a week of the surgery (very typical for me). The sinus rinse the surgeon had me on didn't seem to be working. He put me back on prednisone again (which I was sooo not happy about) but the sense of smell did come back and the surgeon has since put me on a new rinse. So far so good. I still have sense of taste and smell. Energy, well that's another story. But hey, two out of three isn't bad!
